- THE CASTLE OF OTHELLO
The Castle of Othello that was built in 14th century by the Lusignan, was used as one of the main entrances of the city of Magusa. Under the relief of the Lion of St. Mark which is hung on the castle entrance, the name of captain Nicolo Foscari who reshaped the castle and the date 1492 can be seen. In the Castle surrounded with a deep drain, there are corridors ending with towers and artillery battalions. In the courtyard of the Castle, there were guns, iron shots

and stone shots which some of them belonging to the Ottomans and others belonging to the Spanish. The Land Gate was guarded with Ravelin (a citadel shaped as half moon). In addition to the gates and gun sockets, there are underground rooms to be used as chapel and dungeon
The name of the Castle today, has started to be used in the English period. A part of Shakespeare’s famous tragedy has taken place in a seaport in Cyprus. The hero of the play is introduced as someone from Morocco (Moor). It is thought that the play wright has heard the name of the Venetian governor of the city whose name was Christophoro Moro, which meant “Moor” and was mistaken for thinking that he was from Morocco.
The hall in the Castle has acted as the host for many artistry and cultural activities today. Many facilities of Magusa Cultural, Artistry and Tourism Festival that is organized by Magusa City Hall has happened here. |
