Karpaz - City Guide

Karpaz peninsula is a truly amazing area that covers the northern tip of the island. Sometimes Karpaz called as one of the last unspoiled areas in Mediterranean and Europe. It is almost free from the interference of man. Instead nature has been left to its own spectacular devices to create an attraction mere man could never ever achieve.

The area is carpeted by trees, rolling hills, huge sand dunes and truly sensational beaches. The only signs of human interference are few small hotels and restaurants and several farms. Karpaz is a peaceful place where you could see wild donkeys and observe turtles' nesting. Karpaz peninsula is one of the world's hidden gems.

The road lying parallel to the sea along the North coast, and the road starting from Famagusta from the South become one in the Iskele village, leading visitors directly first to Yenierenkoy, then Dipkarpaz and finally the very tip of the island. On this way you will see many ancient churches and mosques. Ayios Phios church, built in the 5th century BC, is the sole remnant of the ancient Phoenician city of Karpasia which used to be a marketplace between Salamis and Anatolia. Another 5th century basilica, situated near Sipahi village on the Karpaz peninsula, was discovered in 1957 by chance. The basilica is full of mosaics. Monastery of Apostolos Andreas is a centre of pilgrimage for orthodox world. Monastery stands at the tip of the Karpaz peninsula, reaching towards Iskenderum bay. Legend says that the monastery on its bosom is marked with a miracle worked by Apostle Andreas. On one of his missionary journeys, his ship docked at this point on the tip of island. As the Apostles disembarked and stepped on the land, a spring gushed below his feet. United Nations included Apostolos Andreas Monastery in its World Heritage list. It is a captivating, special and holy place.
